Circuit info

Autódromo Internacional Nelson Piquet

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
We don't have our own real GPS-telemetry-based 3D model for this circuit (typically a pre-2023 or discontinued venue). The outline below is a freely usable, hand-drawn circuit diagram. This layout was in use during: 1978,1981-1989.Circuit diagram: ROY Jules (julesr0y) (CC BY 4.0). source & licenseOther known layouts at this circuit: 1978,1981-1989
Interesting facts

The Autódromo Internacional Nelson Piquet was built between 1971 and 1977 on reclaimed marshland in Rio de Janeiro's Jacarepaguá district, replacing the earlier road course at Barra da Tijuca used from 1964 to 1970. The inaugural race on 27 January 1978 was won by Carlos Reutemann in a Ferrari 312T3, beating pole-sitter Ronnie Peterson's revolutionary ground-effect Lotus 78. The Brazilian Grand Prix was held here ten times, in 1978 and then from 1981 to 1989, before the race moved permanently to São Paulo's Interlagos in 1990. The circuit was renamed in 1988 in honour of three-time world champion Nelson Piquet, a Rio native who won two races there himself, in 1983 and 1986. At the 1982 race, Nelson Piquet crossed the line first but was disqualified over an illegal, underweight braking system, handing the win to Alain Prost, the first of his five victories at the venue. In 1989, Nigel Mansell scored a surprise win in his Ferrari 640, Formula 1's first car with a semi-automatic gearbox; the circuit itself was demolished in November 2012 to make way for training-centre facilities for the 2016 Rio Olympics. The circuit is located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Formula 1 has raced here since 1978, with 10 races held so far, most recently in 1989. The first race here was won by Carlos Reutemann, in 1978. The most recent winner here was Nigel Mansell, in 1989. Alain Prost has won here more than anyone else, 5 times. Among constructors, McLaren has been the most successful here, with 4 wins.
