Interesting facts

The Prince George Circuit near East London takes its name from Prince George Street, one of the town's main thoroughfares, which formed part of the original racing course. The circuit hosted the South African Grand Prix across three eras: first in 1934, then from 1936 to 1939, and finally from 1960 to 1966, the last stretch as a Formula 1 World Championship round. The original 1934 layout was a 24.461 km street circuit running through populated areas, with the start/finish line along the shoreline; it was shortened to 18.619 km by 1936. By 1959 it had been rebuilt into a far more compact 3.920 km seaside 'amphitheatre' layout to meet Formula 1's requirements. The official Formula 1 lap record was set by Jack Brabham in 1966, driving his own Brabham BT19, at 1:25.200. Organizers eventually judged the circuit too small for the ever more powerful Formula 1 cars of the era, and the South African Grand Prix relocated to the larger, more modern Kyalami. You'll find it in Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. On the calendar since 1962, this circuit has hosted 3 races, the latest in 1965. Graham Hill took the inaugural win here in 1962. Jim Clark won here most recently, in 1965. The most successful driver at this circuit is Jim Clark, with 2 wins. Lotus-Climax is the dominant constructor at this circuit, with 2 wins.
